How to connect Google Assistant with SmartThings 본문
The Google Assistant is a voice-activated assistant available on the Google Home speaker and all Google Android devices. Ask it questions. Tell it to do things. It’s your own Google–always ready to help. Just start by saying, “Ok Google” to enjoy music, get answers straight from Google, manage your everyday tasks, and easily control smart devices around your home with SmartThings.
With voice control through the Google Assistant, you can control lighting, plugs, thermostats, and Routines without leaving your couch!
Google Assistant can also tell you the current state of door/window sensors and temperature sensors, so you can make sure your home is safe and secure.
Note: For security reasons, Google Assistant will only support Routines that trigger thermostats (US only) and lighting actions, door locking, arming SmartThings Home Monitor, and mode changes. Your existing Routines may not work if they have an unsupported action or device, including but not limited to: unlocking locks, disarming SmartThings Home Monitor, and openinggarage doors.

Get started
First, download the SmartThings mobile app for Android or iOS and create an account.
The Google Assistant requires either a Google Home speaker, an Android 6.0+ mobile phone, or an Android Wear 2.0+ device to connect with SmartThings. Here's how you can prepare your specific device to connect with SmartThings:
- Google Home: Download the Google Home mobile app for Android or iOS and set up your Google Home device before connecting with SmartThings
- Android Mobile 6.0+: The Google Assistant is available on Android 6.0+ mobile phones. Simply ensure you have Google Assistant enabled by long pressing the home button, as your Android phone will connect directly to SmartThings through the Google Assistant.
- Android Wear 2.0+: Download the Android Wear app for Android or iOS and connect your Android Wear 2.0+ device, and be sure to copy or log in to your Gmail account on the watch. You may also need to update the Google app within the Google Play store on your watch.
Connect Google Assistant with SmartThings
- Google Home
- Android Mobile 6.0+
- Android Wear 2.0+
- Open the Google Home app and tap the Home tab
- Tap the plus icon
- Tap Set up device
- Under Works with Google, tap Have something already set up?
- Select SmartThings
- Enter your SmartThings/Samsung account email address and tap Next
- Enter your password and tap Sign in

Assign your devices to rooms
By assigning your SmartThings devices to a room with Google Home Control, you can control multiple lights as a group. First, add rooms in Google Home Control and then assign devices to your rooms.
Note: Rooms set up in Google Home Control are completely separate from the Rooms in the SmartThings app. The Google Assistant will not recognize SmartThings Rooms, and you will need to assign your devices to rooms within Google Home Control in order to control them by room with the Google Assistant. Also, Routines cannot be activated through a command for a Room, so we do not recommend adding Routines to Rooms.
- Google Home
- Android Mobile 6.0+
- Android Wear 2.0+
- Open the Google Home app and tap the menu
- Tap Home control
- Tap Rooms
- Tap the plus icon in the bottom right
- Select a room to add
To add a room that’s not listed, tap Custom Room at the bottom - Tap Done
- Next, tap the Devices tab
- Select a device you want to assign to a room
- Tap Room
- Select the room you would like to assign the device to
- Tap the back arrow and repeat the process to add more rooms and assign more devices to your rooms
This completes the setup and you’re ready to control your SmartThings devices with your voice through the Google Assistant.
Give voice commands to Google Assistant
Here are some sample phrases for lighting and switch devices. For the Google Home speaker, you can use “Ok Google” and “Hey Google” interchangeably.
“Ok Google, turn on/off all lights.”
“Ok Google, turn on/off all switches.”
“Ok Google, turn on/off everything in the kitchen.”
“Ok Google, dim/brighten the lights in the living room.” (This will adjust the brightness by 20%)
“Ok Google, set the bedroom light to 10%.” (Brightness can be modified on a scale of 0-100%.)
“Ok Google, dim/brighten the bathroom light by 50%.”
“Ok Google, turn lights in the game room green.”
“Ok Google, turn on/off everything.”
“Ok Google, is the patio light on?”
“Ok Google, is the children’s light off?”
Note: The Google Assistant recognizes “lights,” “switches,” and “outlets” as different kinds of devices. E.g., if you say, “Ok Google, turn on the lights,” it will turn on smart light bulbs but may not turn on smart switches that are connected to lamps or other lighting fixtures. To control those switches, add the word “light” to the name or nickname of the device.
Here are some sample phrases for thermostats:
“Ok Google, set the living room thermostat to 70.”
“Ok Google, turn the thermostat up/down 5 degrees.”
“Ok Google, make it warmer/cooler.” (This will adjust the temperature by 2 degrees.)
“Ok Google, turn on the heat/cooling.” (This will change the mode and/or turn the thermostat on)
“Ok Google, turn thermostat to heat-cool mode.”
“Ok Google, turn off the thermostat.”
“Ok Google, what’s the temperature inside?”
“Ok Google, what’s the thermostat set to?”
Here are some sample phrases for Routines:
“Ok Google, run Good Morning.”
“Ok Google, activate Movie Time.”
Note: Google Assistant will only support Routines that trigger thermostats (US only) and lighting actions, door locking, arming SmartThings Home Monitor, and mode changes. For security reasons, your existing Routines may not work if they have an unsupported action or device, including but not limited to: unlocking locks, disarming SmartThings Home Monitor, and opening garage doors.
You can also ask Google Assistant for the current state of contact and temperature sensors:
“Ok Google, is my front door open?”
“Ok Google, is my bedroom window open?”
"Ok Google, what temperature is the kitchen motion sensor?"
"Ok Google, what is the temperature of the back door?"
Edit the devices Google Assistant can access
When you authorize your SmartThings account for Google Assistant, by default, Google Assistant receives blanket permissions to access all of your SmartThings devices, Routines, and Scenes. However, you can edit the devices Google Assistant can access with these steps:
- SmartThings app
- SmartThings Classic app
In the SmartThings app:
- From the Home screen, touch Menu ( )
- Tap Settings
- Tap Connected services
- Tap Google
- You will see the toggle switch for Allow Google Assistant to access all devices and Routines–toggle the switch to the OFF state
- Tap Switches or Thermostats
- Tap the checkbox for each device you want Google Assistant to access
- Tap Done
- You can also toggle the switch for Routines and Scenes to the ON state
Note: You can only choose all or no Routines and Scenes. You cannot select individual Routines - Tap Done
Add new SmartThings devices to the Google Assistant
By default, Google Assistant receives blanket permissions to access all of your SmartThings devices, Routines, and Scenes when you authorized your SmartThings account during setup, which extends permission to any newly added devices and Routines, as well. If you add new devices or Routines to SmartThings after you’ve connected the Google Assistant, the new device or Routine will be added automatically and will be ready for voice control through Google Assistant right away!
If you edited the Google SmartApp in the SmartThings app to remove blanket permissions and limit Google Assistant’s access to only certain devices you’ve chosen, use the following steps to add new devices to Google Assistant.
Note: You can only choose to grant Google Assistant access to all Routines and Scenes or no Routines and Scenes.
- SmartThings app
- SmartThings Classic app
In the SmartThings app:
- From the Home screen, touch Menu ( )
- Tap Settings
- Tap Connected services
- Tap Google
- You will see the devices Google Assistant currently has access to
- Tap Switches or Thermostats
- Tap the checkbox for each new device Google Assistant needs access to
- Tap Done
- You can also toggle the switch for Routines and Scenes to the ON or OFF state, if needed
- Tap Done
